District Initiatives in Outdoor Learning

Schools in our district are always up to interesting things in the field of outdoor learning! Sharing them here will hopefully inspire us to try something new or connect with people that have being involved in these projects. If you want to share something you or a colleague is doing, please send a title and about a 100 word description.
Outdoor learning program at South Canoe School

The district will open the outdoor learning program at South Canoe beginning in September 2018. It is a testament to the growth of the movement to connect children to nature among teachers, parents and senior leadership at our district. We see this as an opportunity to help students within the scope of our strategic plan. For more info visit: www.outdoorlearning.ca/south-canoe-outdoor-learning-school

"Outdoor Awesomes" with Falkland and MV Beattie

Our district's eight and ninth "Outdoor Awesome" events ventured into the hills behind Falkland and Enderby. Set up as an outdoor fair, kids rotated through stations taught by teachers and local outdoor educators. Students were engaged in all sorts of outdoor activities from outdoor writing, wide-games, skull identification and shelter building. This was an opportunity for classroom teachers to observe other educators in alternative environments as professional development. All schools in our district have now taken part in these events over the past four years.
Everything Shuswap Grant and Programs around Shuswap Region

Everything Shuswap Grants given out to schools.  Through the generosity of Jim Cooperman, we were able to give out $8845 worth of grants to teachers to support students with Outdoor Learning, Shuswap.  1013 students will directly benefit from these grants supporting outdoor focused field trips (Kingfisher, Watershed, Larch Hills, Raven Trail, Adams Lake, North Fork and more).

Copies of the book can be purchased at local bookstores, Askew’s, Blind Bay Village Grocer and other local stores, the book is also available in community and school libraries.  We thank Jim for his partnership, support of students and his advocacy for education about nature and our local community.
