Connect through SHEEPSA (Shuswap chapter of the Environmental Education PSA)

Why join SHEEPSA?

#1 - RESOURCES

  • We are annotating a USEFUL list of resources as we discover and use them ourselves

  • Become part of a strong network of people in our district who we can ask when we need a good resource about snakes. Or pocket gophers. Or climate change. Or the carbon cycle. Or about atmospheres and greenhouse gasses. Or about colonialism. Or consumerism. You get the idea.

  • We are working toward a comprehensive K-12 scope and sequence of environmental/climate change Core Concepts that is both cross-curricular and in line with our current curriculum.

#2 – COMMUNITY

  • We aim to build a strong community who can support one another with our eco-anxiety, grief, hopelessness – all those feelings that we first have to recognize and then remediate.  We can build a culture of HOPE and RESILIENCE together!

#3 – IT’S TIME TO ACT

  • Greta’s most recent speech says it all

  • The recent report of the IPCC it clear – if we don’t act now to educate and shift mindsets, the prospects for a liveable future for our children and students is grim.

  • SD83 has now passed Policy 124 Climate Action. The Ministry of Education has also stated that “B.C.’s redesigned curriculum is well positioned to support climate education.”

  • There is also a motion going forward to the BCTF Executive Committee to create a task force of 12 educators to compile/create a K-12 Climate Education document, and this work has already begun in many places – SD 19 (Revelstoke), Be The Change Earth Alliance and probably more. This is all to say, we are not a “fringe” group anymore – if anything, SD 83 needs to catch up with what other school districts are accomplishing and tackling!

How to join SHEEPSA….

1. If you are a past or present member of the BCTF:

Membership is $30 per year, which can be reimbursed with your Pro-D account. $20 of this goes straight to our SHEEPSA chapter. We can then decide together how to use this money (resource kits for the DESC? Food? Prizes? Guest Speakers?). Go here to join:   http://eepsa.org/membership/

2. If you are not a member of the BCTF:

We do not want money to be a barrier; it is more important to have YOU than to have your money. Contact our treasurer, Emily Styles, at estyles@sd83.bc.ca to discuss your membership preference.
