Fortune Creek in Enderby

Click image for site map and details in google maps.

Directions: Coming into Enderby from the south, your first right turn is onto Back Enderby Rd. There is a ball diamond at this corner. Down about 1 km is the bridge that goes over the creek

Description of site: The creek itself is about a 12’ wide flowing body of water. In spring it is full and probably not approachable, but in the fall it is lower, slower, and easily approached. The depth around the bridge in the fall directly under the bridge is about 1’, but is deeper the further away from the bridge. The study site is centred under a bridge, which is where backpacks can be left, along the sides of the road on the bridge. The shores have lots of grasses, the creek has plenty of aquatic plants, both making for lots of aquatic invertebrates to be found.

This site is on Spallumcheen Band land, so a good first step would be to contact the Band office (250-838-6496), and relate what your class is planning to do and use the site for.

Suitable for grades: Best suitable for grades 6 and up because of the ability to approach, and even be in the creek to study its health.

Teaching space: There is enough space to have a full classroom, divided say into 6 groups of 5, working at separate sites. This makes for constant movement by the teacher to touch base with the groups.

Other pertinent details:

  • Picnic tables: No; lunch can be eaten along the bridge sides, or along the shores of the creek

  • Bathrooms: No

  • Cell phone reception: Yes

  • Adequate parking if necessary: Better as a bus drop off site, but a few cars could park just past the bridge

  • Shelter for students: Only under the bridge

  • Other useful amenities: ponds, creek, meadow, shelter under trees
