Fortune Creek in Armstrong

Click image for site map and details in google maps.

Directions: Coming from Armstrong, the bridge/creek is about 5 minutes north along Hwy 97

Description of site: The creek itself is about a 10’ wide flowing body of water. In spring it is full and probably not approachable, but in the fall it is very low, slower, and very easily approached. The depth around the bridge in the fall is about 3” - 1’. The study site is centred under highway #97 bridge and an unused railroad bridge. The shores have some grasses, the creek has some aquatic plants, but there are uncommon aquatic invertebrate species found here (that require very clean water for their survival).

This site goes under the highway, and is beside the highway.  It is a safe site, but just something to be aware of.

Suitable for grades: Best suitable for grades 4 and up because of the ability to approach, and even be in the creek to study its health.

Teaching space: There is enough space to have a full classroom, divided say into 6 groups of 5, working at separate sites. This makes for constant movement by the teacher to touch base with the groups.
